19 tricks to keep your house neat and clean

I like the calm and focus that comes from having a neat and clean house. For me, it is important that there is an order at home. Keeping your home tidy has many advantages, such as:

  • Fewer distractions

  • Less stress, more peace

  • More space for what’s important

  • Less maintenance

Keeping the house neat and clean can sometimes be difficult, especially if you have young children or you are very busy. That is why, if you are like me, you might enjoy having some tricks to keep the house neat and clean.          

People like to make round numbers like 5, 10, 15 or 20 but here I’ll give you 19 real tricks. These are some tricks to keep the house neat and clean. Starting all these habits at once can be counterproductive and demotivating. The ideal is to gradually start them up, one by one

  1. Store your things as soon as you get home (coat, purse, wallet, etc ...). Establish a place for these objects: a plate in front of the door is useful to leave the objects that we usually take when we go out, putting a coat rack in the entrance hall and a shoe drawer or taking off our shoes will remove a lot of dust at home. There are little tricks that will be very useful to us.

  2. Keep flat surfaces free of objects (tables, desks, countertops ...). Not only do they occupy spaces and it will look bad, also around these objects dirt can accumulate that will look bad at first glance moreover, we increase the possibility of making it fall. At the table we should only have what is necessary. Also avoid having centrepieces if you are going to use that surface a lot.

  3. Have a place for everything, and put everything in its place immediately. At first it can be complicated if we are not used to it or do not yet have a predetermined place. It will take time, but then you will see that you will save time!

  4. Make the bed every day. If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. A room with the bed made is already a room 50% cleaner. Seeing the bed made will prompt us to clean the entire room. If you start now, it is easy to get into the habit and it is a pleasure to sleep in a well-made bed.

  5. Tide up everything before going to sleep and before leaving home. We may be tired and lazy, but it will give us even more when we come back and wake up. You just need a little bit of willpower.

  6. Clean the shower, toilet and bathroom sink after each use (it only takes a couple of minutes). It is easier to keep it clean than to do a deep clean.  If we keep the bathroom clean we will never feel that we have to clean it. You will also avoid serious hygiene problems. 

  7. Order for 15 minutes every day. Try to get 15 minutes everyday in the morning or afternoon for this and do it quickly. Involve the whole family or flatmates (you can even do competitions). An exclusive cleaning time, no matter how short, can not only be very rewarding, but also creates a good habit. Know already that this is the time to clean up beforehand.

  8. Hang the clothes or put them in the basket immediately. We all have done it, filling the chair with clothes as if it were a dirty clothes closet is the most typical thing in the world. But if what we want is a clean house and a tidy closet, don’t do that. Simply having a bucket near where you change your clothes will change your life.

  9. Take out the trash every day. If you are lucky enough to have a garbage can where you can leave the garbage outside your house, you should always take it out as soon as you wake up. It not only improves the hygiene of your house but also the smell. If you are not lucky enough to have a rubbish bin and you have to lower it only on certain days each month, it is good to have a bin indoors, in the yard or in a ventilated place.

  10. Keep sinks clean and shiny (wash dishes immediately, leave the sink clean afterwards). Having the place where you wash the dishes clean is important if you want to have better hygiene and avoid bugs, ants or other insects taking over your kitchen. Thus, clean it every time you use it.

  11. Have an inbox where you can put all the papers (post-its, bills, school papers…), and empty it every day. For young people, letters are just a nuisance, but as you get older, more letters and letters will arrive that you will have to keep well stored before you get rid of them. Find a place at the entrance to store them before opening them and try to keep your mail updated, get rid of the flyers and leaflets that you won’t need.

  12. Every time you make tea or coffee, tidy up the kitchen. It’s only a couple of minutes, but it helps keep order. It is normal, when we make the first coffee in the morning we are sleepy and the last thing we want is to clean, but then the rush arrives and we forget. Depose the coffee grounds as soon as you make the coffee, they are very useful for gardening!

  13. Clear the table and wash the dishes right after eating. If you don’t have a dishwasher, it’s important to clean everything you use. Don’t let the next person who needs the pot be the one to clean it for you. If you have a dishwasher, as soon as it is full, turn it on, and as soon as it is clean, take it out.

  14. Eliminate all the decorative objects that you can. There is a term in art called "Horror Vacui" which literally means "horror to the void". If you are that type of person, cleaning every corner of your house can become a real game of Tetris. Better quality over quantity, empty those shelves of things you even didn’t know the existence and enjoy a cleaner and more spacious home.

  15. When you’re cooking (and you have something in the oven or on the stove) take the opportunity to clean something (sweep or mop the floor, dust, clean the fridge). Be careful not to burn your food! Before losing the momentum of the activity, clean what you have dirt. There will be less you have to clean up when you already have that delicious food chilling in front of you.

  16. Do not bring new things home. In any case, use the "one in, two out" rule: for every object that comes into the house, get rid of two. Yes, it seems exaggerated, but are you really going to play tennis one day? And honestly, that guitar only serves to collect dust. Empty your house of what you do not use, less dust to clean and extra money in your pocket.

  17. Reduce your storage space: this way you will accumulate less. We all have that drawer of clothes that we never use, or that shelf with a fondue pot that we bought for a special occasion that seemingly never comes. Solution? Remove all spaces with superfluous storage. Japanese style, little, well ordered and cleaner. A clean house gives a better image than a house with a fondue.

  18. Encourage those who live under your roof to keep the house tidy and clean. Don’t be afraid to look like a sergeant, it’s for the common good. If everyone does their part, everything is simple.

  19. The “One Year Box”: Put in a box all those objects that you have doubts about what to do with them. Seal this box and keep it for a year. If during that year you have not had to open the box, throw it away without opening it. You probably won’t remember what’s in it.
